A Prayer for Molly

Molly Holzschlag

Earlier this week, I attended the STC Summit in Dallas. I spoke in the Usability and User Experience track on the importance of sketching in the design process. The STC organizers did a wonderful job putting on theirconference. Molly Holzschlag of Molly.com was scheduled to give a keynote presentation, but she had to cancel at the last minute because of an ear infection. Rumors did spread through the conference about a keynote speaker missing. As rumors go, they were mostly negative and completely FALSE. Yesterday, I sent an email to Molly to let her know that people were extremely disappointed [...]

What Makes Them Click, You Can Ask Susan

Susan Weinschenk

I am an avid reader of design books. I have read books by Jakob Nielsen, Jared Spool, Russ Unger, Ginny Redish, Donna Spencer, Nathan Shedroff, Paul Sherman, Joshua Porter, Steve Krug, and Louis Rosenfeld. While I cannot speak for all of the Big Design Conference organizers, I do know that this writer (Brian Sullivan) is a big fan of the work of Susan Weinschenk, especially her last book called Neuro Web Design: What Makes Them Click?. As with most books these days, we seem to get an obligatory blog, where authors continue conversations with their audience. Susan’s blog for Neuro [...]

Got Mental Notes (You Can at #BigD10)

Got Mental Notes

I know this happens all the time: You are in the middle of a super busy project and you need some inspiration or a memory jogger. You can’t see the forest because of the trees. Take a five-minute mental break, get a Starbucks, and reach for these Mental Notes by the Stephen Anderson, amigos. You get 50 insights from psychology into an easy reference and brainstorming tool. Each card describes one insight into human behavior and suggests ways to apply this to the design of Web sites, Web apps, and software applications. You can get a teaser deck at Big [...]

Books are Dead, Long Live Books!

Stack of Books

You start to notice patterns when you organize a conference. For example, I have heard people tell me that books are dead, using the logic of e-readers (iPad, Nook, and Kindle) will replace the existing books that people read. I have seen an interesting thing happen. I have been using bitly to tweet up these blog entries. It has been wonderful to monitor that my tweets for the Rosenfeld Media giveaways have been tracking extremely HIGH. In fact, these tweets about books are the second highest rated bitly item right now. If books are dead, long live books (in their [...]

Aquent Mixer

On Saturday night of the Big Design Conference, we have arranged an after-conference mixer sponsored by our friends at Aquent. The location of this mixer is at Cohabitat (a special thanks to Blake Burris). We have worked out a lot of surprises with Matthew Feldman (twitter: @feldmanmatthew) of Aquent. On Friday night of the Big Design Conference, we have arranged a patio party sponsored by our friends at Mad*Pow (twitter: @MadPow). The location of this patio party is one of our favorite local pubs–the Thomas Avenue Beverage Company, affectionately known as TABC. As you know, TABC is just minutes away from SMU and literally around the block from CoHabitat. We have rented out thier large patio in the back of TABC. You do not want to miss this party. We were very happy and surprised when Josh Corringham (twitter: @corringham) of Mad*Pow contacted us about throwing this party. Josh [...]

Panel Spotlight: Profit/Non-Profit Panel

Jim Carlsen-Landey

There is a funny thing that happened on the way to the Big Design Conference…..we created a Profit/Non-Profit Panel based on some comments by Jim Carlsen-Landy. The story begins with Jim and I joking about how non-proft designers might handle a situation that we were facing at work. We both thought it would be great to see this type of panel at Big Design. How would we find the right people? It took a little ingenuity. But, we knew the right people to contact. We found them in about 3 days. And, now, the rest of the story. Panel Talk: [...]
