Navigating UX Burnout to Sustain a Meaningful Career

Sarah HoaglanSarah Hoaglan is a designer and strategist who is passionate about solving complex problems through technology, business intelligence, and user experience. She has spent 12 years pursuing user-centered solutions for large enterprise corporations.

Sarah currently works at The Home Depot in Atlanta, GA, leading a team that focuses on merchandising and product assortment in markets across North America. She holds a master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction and a bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

Here is how Sarah describes her talk:

The UX profession has seen exponential interest over the last decade. Every company wants UX and everyone wants a career in the second most in-demand role for 2019 according to the Onward Search Digital, Creative and Marketing Professionals Salary Guide. So how exactly could I explain that I was no longer passionate about my UX career, going through an intense period of burnout, while trying to convince people that I was not just another self-centered Millennial in what has been labeled as the least engaged workforce?

The demand for UX and my overachieving personality has come at a cost. Without careful navigation and awareness, it’s easy to become entangled in a world where your efforts may not match your expectations. This session highlights the emotions that come with burnout and uncovers how your UX job is directly contributing. I will also share tips and strategies for overcoming your own burnout journey.
