Envisioning Language: Typographic Function in UX / UI
Typography as a communication element is an underrated problem-solver in the UX/UI toolkit. This presentation will argue against the instinctual overemphasis on visual content including imagery, icons, motion graphics, and interstitial transitions in UI when typographic solutions can present a more efficient, clear, and lightweight solution. Improvements to typographic awareness has historically required discussion of its applied merit to current technologies — I propose that typography is the fundamental carrier of human language in its graphical state, and that a greater amount of relevance and detail should be given to typography in the UX space as well, as it is all too often relegated to a UI afterthought. Examples of applied typography in various media will be discussed, as well as a historical and cultural overview of the role of typography in human computer interaction.
There will also be bingo.
