Going Solo (again) — Insights from UX Consulting
They say the third time’s the charm — and indeed as I embark upon my third outing as an indie UX consultant, I’d like to share what it’s really like while trying to build a virtuous cycle of speaking, teaching, and advising. Turns out, there are some volatile emotions paired with tactical challenges. Plenty of firsthand lessons and insights are offered for those seeking to expand their repertoire into the realm of UX consulting. Whether you’re a newbie venturing on your own, a corporate design veteran striving to branch out with full autonomy, or an in-house designer looking to champion UX internally, this talk will offer valuable battle-tested tips.
Specifically my talk is structured like a 3-act play: Act 1 is the Setup for success, with a self-analysis for your own positioning of strengths or brand value. I shall walk through a template that can help you assess and decide how to project your value. Act 2 is the Action itself of working with clients, the do’s and don’ts — filled with a few funny (and perhaps tragic) anecdotes. And Act 3 is the Insights gleaned from a variety of projects, including a useful Epilogue of useful tools & resources.
