Growing Enterprise Design through Making Connections
Designers are known for their ability to make connections—to take in a wide variety of diverse data points and begin finding meaning through patterns and associations. They thrive by continually forming, breaking, and remixing these connections.
As leaders of enterprise design programs, we can also make use of this ability to grow the presence, influence, and impact of design. Connect design to the company’s strategic priorities. Connect product teams to users. Connect designers to one another in community. Connect internal efforts to external inspiration. Connect people with opportunities to learn. Connect design to other initiatives like agile and innovation.
In his time as a design manager and design practice lead at ExxonMobil, Nick Cochranhas recognized the essential nature of finding and making these kinds of connections. This talk will highlight how his team has used this ability to help grow the design program over the past 5 years, featuring many examples of connections made and some they wished had been made sooner. He’ll also share some of the practical means they use to gather these data points in the first place so that more valuable connections can be made.
