February 25: Responsive Web Design Workshop

Responsive web design allows you to design flexible sites that look good and work beautifully on phones, tablets, laptops, and giant TVs alike.  You can take a quantum leap in your skills as a web designer or front-end developer. In this full-day workshop, Ben Judy will teach you how to employ fluid grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries, while avoiding common pitfalls and covering the blind spots. Finally, Ben leads us through the process of building and testing a responsive site, while we explore related Web design concepts and enable ourselves to make brilliant sites that work for all of our users — on all of their devices!

What You Will Learn:

  • Separating design from layout
  • Deconstructing a design to make it fluid and flexible
  • Adapting layouts for phones, tablets, laptops, and more
  • Deciding on navigation, search, and content elements
  • Optimizing typography (fonts and font sizes) for different screens
  • Avoiding common pitfalls and blind spots

About Ben Judy:

Ben Judy wrote his first piece of HTML code in 1996.  Since that time, Ben has worked as a designer, IA, and usability professional for American Airlines, Get There, RAPP, Tangle.com, and Airline Solutions.  Ben also runs a podcast called DFWUX, where he interviews designers and usability professionals. Ben is a Certified Technical Trainer.  He also served as a soldier in the Army National Guard from 1997 to 2005 (deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving as a Sergeant in 2003.

  1. I’ll warn you all right now, this is going to be a FUN workshop!

    It will be very hands-on. We will design together. We will write code together. We will laugh at funny slides together. We will mercilessly beat a piñata in the likeness of your most despised politician and/or celebrity until tasty, sweet, sugar-free treats fall out.* Oh, and we will play games. You won’t even realize you’re learning!

    * probably not really, unless you bring said piñata full of treats
